Ukraine asserts a significant victory on Sunday, revealing that Patriot missiles supplied by the United States have successfully intercepted over a dozen Russian Kinzhal missiles, previously touted as “unkillable” by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, initiated by Putin’s invasion in late February 2022, continues to unfold unexpectedly as it approaches its two-year mark. Ukrainian estimates suggest substantial casualties for Russian forces, with nearly 360,000 deaths and extensive military hardware losses. While the Kremlin does not disclose Ukrainian losses, recent reports indicate a grim situation for Russia.

Ukrainian Triumph Over “Unrivaled” Kinzhal Missiles

Ukrainian Colonel Yurii Ihnat announces that the anti-aircraft Patriot missiles, received from the U.S. in the spring, have successfully downed 15 Russian Kinzhal missiles. These missiles, once hailed as “super weapons” by Putin, have been deemed “unkillable,” making Ukraine’s interception a remarkable feat.

Ihnat acknowledges the limited stock of Patriot systems, emphasizing the need for additional resources to effectively counter Russian forces. Despite the success, he underscores the insufficiency of the current Patriot batteries in confronting the ongoing conflict.

Newsweek’s attempt to seek comments from Russian officials regarding Ukraine’s claim remains unanswered, adding to the complexity of the situation and the global attention focused on the conflict.

Kinzhal Missiles’ Mixed Combat Debut

The Kinzhal missiles, once lauded by Putin as “unkillable,” face a surprising setback as Ukraine reports successfully intercepting them. The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense notes the missiles’ mixed performance on the battlefield, suggesting that many launches may have missed targets.

The ministry’s report highlights Ukraine’s ability to intercept attacks by the supposedly “undefeatable” Kinzhal system, casting doubt on its perceived invulnerability. The revelation of this vulnerability is considered a significant blow to Russian forces, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict.
