After the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, three former Trump administration officials, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sarah Matthews, and Cassidy Hutchinson, warned that his return to government threatens democracy.
Former Trump Officials Warn of Democracy Threat in Potential Second Term
The trio told ABC News about their experiences with the Jan. 6 select committee and the potential consequences of a second Trump term. Hutchinson stressed that a second Trump term might terminate American democracy and the necessity to protect institutions and the constitutional republic in the forthcoming election.
Griffin said a second term for Trump could harm American democracy due to his attempts to subvert the voting process. She noted Trump’s willingness to shatter barriers to obtain and maintain power. Matthews said Trump’s unstable rhetoric, including threats to subvert the Constitution and exploit the Justice Department for political ends, has sharpened his fixation on returning to power. Matthews emphasized Trump’s ongoing charges of election fraud.
Hutchinson noted for her emotional testimony before the House subcommittee investigating Jan. 6, cited Trump’s Fox News interview with Sean Hannity, in which he did not rule out dictatorship. She called Trump’s consideration of dictatorship a sign of weakness and lack of character, ethics, and leadership. Three ladies highlighted the need to stop Trump’s reelection.
Former Trump Officials Advocate for Democracy Amid Concerns Over Trump’s Potential Return
Matthews acknowledged the difficult presidential election choices but said democracy would be prioritized before party connections. She mentioned supporting President Biden if necessary to stop Trump’s reelection. Hutchinson stressed the need to prevent Trump from becoming president again. Griffin and Matthews praised Hutchinson’s bravery and pushed other senior officials to speak up.
Trump fans’ cult-like following and death threats made speaking out against him risky, the women said. They urged more people to come out against Trump and see his threats. After the interview, Trump called the three women “ungrateful grifters” who betrayed and took employment for personal gain.
