The US State Department, represented by spokesperson Ned Price, has characterized the presence of Russian Wagner’s mercenaries in Libya as a disruptive force, posing threats to public security, violating human rights, and engaging in looting activities within the countries they operate.
In a stern warning to Khalifa Haftar, the United States has raised concerns about his efforts to align himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin
Highlighting Moscow’s ambitions, Price pointed to the recent visit of Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus Bek Evkurov to Libya, at the invitation of Khalifa Haftar, as evidence of Russia’s intention to establish a military presence in Africa. The US State Department contends that the Russian African Legion is gearing up for significant military operations on the continent, aimed at countering Western influences.
Accusing Wagner of destabilizing Libya and utilizing it as a strategic base for regional activities, the US emphasizes its commitment to fostering a sovereign, stable, unified, and secure Libyan state
Price underscored Washington’s objective of enabling Libya to independently manage its affairs, with transparent and fair elections identified as the sole means to establish a national government capable of providing security.
The US has repeatedly cautioned Khalifa Haftar against aligning with Putin’s agenda, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such associations on the region’s stability and security. Washington remains steadfast in its pursuit of a democratic and self-sufficient Libya, advocating for a government elected through transparent processes as the key to achieving enduring stability.
