Ukrainian President Zelensky cautioned against introducing the topic of elections during wartime, labeling it as irresponsible and potentially divisive

Amid speculation about a possible vote in March, Ukrainian President Zelensky insisted that the focus should remain on defending the nation and thwarting Russian aggression.

Highlighting the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Zelensky stressed that manipulations and political divisions should cease, asserting that now is not the appropriate time for elections. Ukrainian legislation currently prohibits elections during martial law in effect since Russia‘s invasion in February 2022, necessitating a legal amendment for a vote to occur.

The president has spoken in the wake of the events

Ukrainian President Zelensky has spoken out in the wake of distressing events within the Ukrainian military, including the unintended fatality of a key aide to Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who suffered fatal injuries while handling a grenade. Ukrainian President Zelensky emphasized the immediate necessity for national unity and the avoidance of internal conflicts, especially in the aftermath of a recent missile strike during a military ceremony, claiming the lives of 19 soldiers. The president assured that those found responsible for safety breaches in the incident would face accountability.
