Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has signed a bill to distribute tax rebates to millions of residents, following the state’s collection of a $2 billion surplus
This surplus in tax revenue, totaling $2 billion, prompted the allocation of $260 million toward the rebate program. The move by Governor Katie Hobbs, driven by Arizona’s conservative Freedom Caucus, marks the first instance in 30 years that the state government has returned money to its citizens. Republican Arizona State Senator Jake Hoffman emphasized the significance of this rebate, attributing it to the impact of rising gas and food prices.
Residents seeking eligibility for the rebate must have filed taxes with at least $1 of liability in either 2019, 2020, or 2021
Earnings will be determined based on 2021 state tax returns, due April 2022. Filers responsible for dependents under 17 will receive $250 per child, with a cap of three children per filer. Families with dependents over 17 will receive $100 per person, with a similar cap of three persons.
Direct deposits will be made to filers who provided updated bank account information, while others will receive a paper check by mail. The state of Arizona will also send out mailers explaining the incoming rebates, ensuring residents are aware of the forthcoming funds. It’s important to note that residents do not need to take immediate action, as the distribution will be automatic.
