Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, is reportedly set to raise the income thresholds for immigrants seeking to settle in the UK
Suella Braverman aims to advocate for an increase in this requirement as part of her efforts to tighten immigration policies and curtail the entry of unskilled laborers and families into the country. Suella Braverman candidly acknowledged that the existing points-based system has not been delivered as promised.
A source within the Home Office bared to The Sunday Times, “Our points-grounded system hasn’t really operated in a way that we promised in our fiat. ” The points-grounded system, introduced in 2020 by former Home Secretary Priti Patel, was cooked to treat EU nationals on par with non-EU migrants, aligning with post-Brexit policies. Suella Braverman now aims to lower migration figures before the upcoming release of statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in line with the Conservative Party’s commitment to reduce net migration.
Recent data indicated a historic high in net migration last year, prompting uncertainty about whether the influx from Ukraine and Hong Kong has peaked
To intensify efforts to reduce migration, Suella Braverman previously declared a restriction on students bringing their relatives to the UK, allowing only a limited number to do so starting from January of the following year. This provision is exclusively for those participating in post-graduate research programs. Although Suella Braverman reportedly aimed for even stricter measures, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan objected, expressing concerns about potential negative impacts on the economy. Last month, Suella Braverman stressed that immigration represented a significant challenge to the Western world’s existence, warning that it had occurred at a pace that was deemed excessive during a speech she delivered in Washington.
