Authorities in Maywood, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, have issued an arrest warrant for Brown regarding the death of his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Brown, whose body was located in a creek on September 16.

Sergio Brown, who had journeyed to Mexico, was taken into custody by Mexican authorities and returned to San Diego, where he was apprehended on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the case.
Legal representation for Sergio Brown remains uncertain. On September 16, both Sergio and Myrtle Brown were reported missing by concerned relatives who were unable to locate or communicate with them. On that day, police investigated the residence shared by Sergio and Myrtle and discovered the mother’s body near a creek in close proximity, authorities reported.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Myrtle Brown had succumbed to injuries from an assault, ruling her death a homicide. Three days after her discovery, a video circulated on social media purportedly showing Sergio Brown in a tropical setting, discussing “fake news” and expressing the belief that his mother was on vacation. The video’s authenticity is under investigation.
Last week, Myrtle Brown’s family urged authorities to expedite the case, asserting that there was sufficient evidence for an arrest. They emphasized that no family should endure uncertainty regarding their loved one’s passing.
The family stated they have not had contact with Sergio Brown since his disappearance
Sergio Brown, 35, retired from professional football several years ago. He played for Notre Dame before joining the New England Patriots in 2010. Mexican law enforcement knew of Brown’s location since at least September 19, but extradition was only possible once Illinois authorities secured a warrant.
However, Brown’s return to the US encountered complications. He caused a disturbance on an extradition flight from Mexico City to Tijuana, leading the pilot to consider removing him. Upon crossing into San Diego, he was taken into custody with the assistance of local and federal authorities. San Diego Sheriff’s Department records indicate Brown is detained on a felony fugitive arrest warrant and is scheduled for a court appearance on November 13.
Under US interstate extradition laws, a hearing is required if a defendant does not waive extradition, potentially necessitating court approval for Brown’s transfer from California to Illinois. Myrtle Brown’s family expressed that her tragic loss has forever changed their lives and emphasized her impact on their community.
