James and Jennifer Crumbley now find themselves at the center of a rare legal case in which prosecutors are seeking to hold the perpetrator’s family partially accountable for a school shooting. The charges against the parents include allegations of making a firearm easily accessible to their son Ethan Crumbley and neglecting his mental health needs.
The Michigan Supreme Court recently upheld a state appeals court decision, allowing the case to proceed to trial. Prosecutors only needed to establish probable cause to move forward, a relatively low threshold at this stage of the legal process. The trial is expected to provide a more comprehensive examination of the case from all angles.

Ethan Crumbley has already pleaded guilty to terrorism and murder and faces the possibility of life in prison without parole. During a four-day hearing in August, prosecutors presented video evidence of the shooting, disturbing excerpts from the shooter’s journal, and testimony from witnesses, including law enforcement and students. The prosecution emphasized chilling statements made by Ethan Crumbley before the attack.

Drawings depicting violence had raised alarm, but the teen managed to avoid further scrutiny by claiming they were related to a video game concept.
