A Kansas police chief named Gideon Cody was suspended after ordering his fellow police to raid the Marion County Record as the Kansas police chief accused the local newspaper of illegally obtaining records about a drunk driving case and disclosing the information.
According to a report published in The Messenger, the Kansas police chief seized the computers and personal cellphones of employees working at the local newspaper; the Kansas police chief even ordered to raid the house of the local newspaper’s co-owner’s home and seized important documents.
With the raid orders of the Kansas police chief, the 98-year-old mother of the co-owner of the local newspaper couldn’t sleep all night when the raid headed by the Kansas police chief happened, leading to her death the next day due to stress.
Kansas Police Chief Criticized for Ignoring Privacy Protection Act by Ordering Raid on Local Newspaper
Following the raid, the Kansas police chief was criticized for ignoring the Privacy Protection Act of journalists working at the local newspaper he raided with his fellow police officers, CBS News reported.
Together with the suspension of the Kansas police chief, the seized materials from the local newspaper and in the co-owner’s house are expected to be returned because there was no sufficient evidence that would justify the sudden raid.
