Emonte Morgan, charged in the tragic shooting of Officer Ella French, has been offered a plea deal that could lead to just seven years of incarceration for his involvement

Emonte Morgan’s brother, Eric Morgan, faced charges of handling the murder weapon and obstruction of justice, with a potential release by 2030, despite the gravity of the offense.  Emonte Morgan, the alleged triggerman, is accused of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and various weapon-related charges. Emonte Morgan’s lawyer, Roger Brown, suggested a potential 23-year sentence if the plea deal is rejected. Brown emphasized that absent the association with Chicago police, Eric’s sentence might have been probation.

Eric’s plea hearing is scheduled for October 12. The fatal encounter occurred during a traffic stop, where expired license plates led to the confrontation. French’s brother expressed deep sorrow over her loss, calling her his cherished sister and underscoring her significance in his life.

The exchange of gunfire resulted from a demand for a suspect to exit the vehicle, leading to tragic consequences

Ella French’s passing marked the first line-of-duty fatal shooting of a Chicago officer during Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s tenure, and the first female officer fatally shot in the city in over three decades.

During the incident, one of the Emonte Morgan and Eric Morgan sustained injuries. Both were on probation at the time. Emonte Morgan’s prior record includes a robbery conviction, along with minor traffic offenses and other charges. Eric, too, had a record that included a theft conviction.

Jamal Danzy, linked to the firearm’s procurement, pleaded guilty to federal firearm offenses. Although not named in the charges, it is alleged that Eric received the weapon and was involved in the tragic event.
