The so-called HOME Act was vetoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom late Friday. According to supporters, the bill could have “ensured that immigrant Californians that provide their time in county jails and make discharge under existing criminal justice reforms arrive home rather than being immediately and brutally transferred to ICE.”
The popular bill, which had the backing of a large number of progressives and organizations working for criminal justice reforms and immigrant rights, was approved by a supermajority in both chambers of the legislature. No serious opposition existed.
It wasn’t just progressive legislation that Newsom vetoed on Friday, and it’s not the very first time the governor has disagreed with immigration activists. According to an investigation by Politico, he opposed a bill in 2019 that would have prohibited private security employees from detaining immigrants in California prisons.
