From at least September 2020, the Mayo Clinic site has included this material on its hydroxychloroquine research page. The brand, not the Mayo Clinic, seems to be the source of the description.
Social media users are disseminating a screenshot of the Mayo Clinic website with the idea that the institution “quietly confirms” that COVID-19 can be treated with hydroxychloroquine. According to one version, “JUST IN: Mayo Clinic QUIETLY ADMITS on its official website that hydroxychloroquine could be used to treat COVID-19.” The Mayo Clinic allegedly “quietly updated[ed]” its website to add the drug as a therapy for COVID-19, according to a different post.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, the drug “may be utilized as well for the treatment of coronavirus (COVID-19) in some hospitalized patients.” Yet, based on older versions of the website, the Mayo Clinic website has featured such text on its page regarding hydroxychloroquine from September 2020, which was left out of the viral posts.
