Friday saw the passage of a bill by the California senate requiring judges to take into account if a parent “affirms” their kid’s “gender identity” when deciding a custody dispute.

As per the Associated Press, Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener and Democratic Assembly Member Lori Wilson proposed the bill in February, with Wiener stating that it was necessary to preserve the “health, security, and happiness of the kid.” The bill was approved by the state Senate on Wednesday with a 30-9 vote before easily passing the general assembly with a 57-16 majority a few days later.

The law states that for the intention of that provision, “this bill will encompass a parent’s acceptance of the kid’s sexual identity or choice of gender as an aspect of the child’s well-being, security, and prosperity.”
