Nick Elkovitch, a long-time employee of Union Cafe and Axis Nightclub in Short North, expressed concerns about the venues’ LGBTQ+ friendliness after his recent dismissal

The change in ownership by Michael Purdum in 2022 prompted Nick Elkovitch to assert that the establishments may no longer prioritize LGBTQ+ inclusivity due to potential impacts on other ventures.

In response, Joey Steward, executive manager, asserted their commitment to maintaining LGBTQ+ safe spaces. Steward emphasized the continuity of staff and internal promotions as evidence of their dedication. Purdum addressed past political donations, stating they won’t compromise the venues’ inclusive nature. Nick Elkovitch, along with others, sought to support drag performers and the ACLU in response to a restrictive Tennessee law, but their proposal was rejected, citing concerns about other affiliated venues.

Despite differing opinions, Ryan Horn, a DJ at both venues, expressed confidence in the management teams

Nick Elkovitch’s statements generated substantial online discussion, with some advocating for alternative LGBTQ+-friendly establishments. Matthew Luc, who ceased promotions work at Axis due to concerns about political contributions, emphasized the importance of LGBTQ+ rights.

Meanwhile, former staff members cited Purdum’s political donations and lack of support for LGBTQ+ causes as reasons for their departure. Tom Culbertson and Steven Alexander, patrons of Union Cafe, acknowledged the controversy but plan to continue visiting, acknowledging differing perspectives on the situation.
