Natalie Ammons, a spokesperson for the Fulton County Jail Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that an active investigation is underway concerning the stabbings but did not disclose further details.
The recent fatality marks the fifth death within Fulton County Jail custody in a span of slightly over a month. The jail’s notoriety intensified when it housed former President Donald Trump and 18 co-indictees who surrendered for booking last week. Their charges pertain to an alleged illegal scheme aimed at overturning the 2020 election results in Georgia.
The U.S. Department of Justice commenced a civil rights investigation in July, focusing on the conditions within the jail
The investigation cited issues of violence, unsanitary conditions, and the prior death of an inmate whose body was discovered infested with insects.
Lashawn Thompson, 35, tragically passed away last September in a cell in Fulton County Jail infested with bedbugs within the jail’s psychiatric wing. An independent autopsy, conducted at the behest of his family, revealed that his demise was a result of severe neglect. Subsequently, his family reached a settlement with the county.
Another inmate in Fulton County Jail, Samuel Lawrence, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Among the other recent casualties are Alexander Hawkins (66), Christopher Smith (34), and Montay Stinson (40). These incidents collectively underscore the pressing need for thorough reforms and interventions within the Fulton County Jail to prevent further tragedies.
