Despite a strong rebound in the recent preseason game against the Denver Broncos, Trey Lance continues to share second-string practice repetitions with Darnold.
In the midst of a month-long 49ers training camp, the ongoing competition for the role of QB2 between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold remains fierce
NFL analyst Brian Baldinger, speaking on 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” show on Tuesday, shared his insights on the current quarterback situation within the Niners. Given their struggles with quarterback injuries last season, the 49ers now have an added safety net for 2023. This year, the NFL introduced the “The Brock Purdy” rule, permitting teams to designate a third quarterback on game days, as long as they are on the active roster. The third QB can only take the field in case the first two quarterbacks are injured, aiming to prevent situations like the previous year’s NFC Championship game when an injured Josh Johnson was replaced by a limited Brock Purdy.
Baldinger suggests that it would be wise for the 49ers to retain both Purdy, Trey Lance, and Darnold if it aligns with their roster strategy
Regardless of the order whether it’s Sam and Trey Lance or Trey Lance and Sam all three guys can be dressed. Looking back, history has shown, though not favorably, that the 49ers have had to rely on one, two, or even three quarterbacks. Their past suggests a pattern, whether it’s superstition or ill fortune. It doesn’t seem beneficial to publicly entertain the idea of parting with Trey Lance. All signs point to letting the young talent persevere.”
