A new ordinance introduced at the Calvert City council’s recent meeting aims to bring about a change in the city tax rate

The council convened on Monday night to consider the change in the city tax rate, which is expected to be adopted during the September 11 meeting after a second reading. Furthermore, the council was presented with a Zoom briefing about potential enhancements to Haddox Ferry, a project connected to the Tennessee RiverLine initiative. Clay Lezon, the Tennessee RiverLine planner, showcased three concepts designed to elevate the city park located at the historic ferry landing.

Calvert City, part of the Tennessee RiverLine’s town partnership program since 2022, has been actively engaged in discussions about utilizing its river access for community development. With the city nestled at mile point 16 along the Tennessee River, it has been collaborating with approximately 20 other partnership members to explore the area’s potential.

After extensive deliberation and consultations about the city tax rate, the focus turned to Haddox Ferry, a significant historical site

Plans include various upgrades like beautification efforts, expanded seating, improved pavilion facilities, and the addition of walking trails and parking areas.

In a separate update during the council meeting about the city tax rate, Mayor Gene Colburn commended Police Chief Mike Cannon for the swift resolution of a hit-and-run case. The tragic incident claimed the life of 18-year-old Mercedeys R. Culligan. The Mayor also addressed concerns about noise pollution caused by engine braking on Main Street.

Moreover, the council discussed property-related matters, including a citizen’s emotional complaint regarding the city’s enforcement of its maintenance code. While no immediate action was taken following an executive session, the proposed ordinance altering the city tax rate stood as a significant highlight of the meeting.
