Prosecutors claim that 850 pounds of cocaine were found during an attempted cross-border smuggling

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that more than 800 pounds of cocaine had been tried to be smuggled this month in New York.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, Canadian citizen Ahmed El-Kady, 37, was detained on suspicion of carrying at least 5 kg of cocaine to distribute it.

According to the attorney’s office, the allegations require a required minimum sentence of ten years in jail, a maximum sentence of life, and a fine of $10,000,000.

El-Kady arrived in the United States on August 7 through the Ambassador Bridge Port of Entry in Detroit, Michigan, based on to a criminal charge. He was operating a commercial vehicle without a trailer connection. He claimed to be taking up a trailer in Detroit when speaking with U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.
