A Texas woman was given a 30-year jail term on Monday for her role in the disposal of a deceased American soldier, whose murder in 2020 encouraged a movement of women coming out against sexual assault in the military and changed the disclosure procedures.

The only person detained in connection with Vanessa Guillén’s death at Fort Cavazos, previously referred to as Fort Hood, next to Killeen, Texas, is Cecily Aguilar. Aguilar, then 24 years old, admitted guilt of a single count of accomplice to murder following the fact and 3 counts of giving false statements in November at a federal court in Waco, Texas.

After hours of hearing from counsel, specialists, and Guillén’s family, the verdict was reached. The U.S. lawyer for the Western District of Texas, Jaime Esparza, stated that it was the harshest penalty Aguilar might get.
