Dmitriy Popov has been officially indicted, as revealed by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez on Thursday.

The young suspect, identified as Dmitriy Popov, was taken into custody by the police following the death of O’Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old professional dancer who was openly gay. Gonzalez stated that this tragic incident would be prosecuted as both a homicide and a hate crime. The charges against Dmitriy Popov include one count of second-degree murder as a hate crime, alongside other charges.
If Dmitriy Popov is found guilty of second-degree murder as a hate crime charge, Dmitriy Popov could face a minimum of 20 years in prison, with the potential for a sentence ranging up to 25 years to life. This case has underscored the disturbing rise of hate rhetoric against the LGBTQ+ community due to anti-LGBTQ+ laws in various parts of the country.

Derogatory comments and homophobic slurs were hurled at them by the other group, leading to a heated confrontation and ultimately violence. Security camera footage captured the escalating argument and the tragic moment when Sibley was fatally stabbed.
Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, lamented the loss and described it as a clear hate crime. The LGBTQ+ community and allies have expressed their outrage over the incident, highlighting the ongoing discrimination they face. The victim, O’Shae Sibley, was celebrated for his contributions to dance and had trained with prestigious dance institutions. Beyoncé even paid tribute to him on her website.
