Democrats in the House are working harder than ever to keep funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the latest agricultural bill. All twenty-five of the Democrats on the House Agriculture Committee published a letter on Monday asking House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, to stay away from getting involved in the generating of the farm bill.
They claim that using threats to alter SNAP enrollment or payouts in the future is ineffective. They believe that it also threatens the attempts of committee chairman Glen “GT” Thompson, a Republican from Pennsylvania, to produce a bipartisan bill.
The letter sent to McCarthy starts, “We wrote you today to convey our worries regarding continued statements from your congressional leadership that might put at risk the discussion and approval of a bipartisan farm bill in the house.” “You know what takes place when leadership interferes with the farm bill’s information, especially when SNAP, a security net for elderly people and the employed poor in America, is at stake.”
