The Chino Valley Unified School District board decided to adopt a practice of outing trans kids to their parents. Assemblyman Bill Essayli, a Republican from Riverside, criticized California Attorney General Rob Bonta to offer an authorized explanation for his Department of Justice civil rights investigation through the board’s decision.

As The Bee earlier reported, the Southern California school district this summer approved a policy requiring professors and other school employees to notify parents if a student requests to utilize an alternate name or pronoun, or if they’re using a restroom or participating in school activities (like sports) that are inconsistent with their sexuality on official documents.

The school board’s choice is in line with AB 1314, a bill that Essayli introduced previously this year. That bill, which could have mandated the adoption of similar guidelines by all state-funded schools, was never heard in committee.
