The White House accused House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) of lying in order to cave to the House Republican Conference’s far-right members and their call for an impeachment investigation into President Biden on Tuesday.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s Fox News appearance, according to Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House Counsel’s Office, “continued lying about President Biden — making a series of plainly false, widely debunked attacks in order to promote the extreme far right’s baseless impeachment stunt that even some members of McCarthy’s own caucus are expressing concerns about pursuing.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy linked the Biden administration to the Nixon administration on Fox News, claiming that both employed the federal government to hinder congressional inquiries. Sams called the comparison “bizarre” and “demonstrably false,” pointing out that the Biden administration’s Treasury Department and the FBI offered records and access to the now GOP-led House Oversight Committee.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s comments on Fox News resembled House Republicans’ claims of bribes involving then-Vice President Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s business transactions.
Sams referenced to Hunter Biden’s former business associate Devon Archer’s testimony, which was revealed last week. Archer was unable to substantiate allegations that Burisma owner Mykola Zlochevsky made two $5 million payments to Hunter Biden and his father during his testimony. Archer also stated that he would disagree with the judgment that Zlochevsky bribed then-Vice President Biden.
Republicans leaked an FBI form last month with unsubstantiated information claiming Biden was participating in such a scheme. The information in the FBI form is based on a long-standing accusation that Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in financing from Ukraine unless then-Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin was removed.
The White House has denied any misconduct, and no evidence has been presented that Biden advocated for Shokin’s removal in order to benefit his son.
He termed conducting an impeachment investigation a “shameless and baseless” charade and said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the GOP should instead work with the president to reduce inflation and improve the economy.
“That is, after all, what the American people sent their leaders to Washington to do,” Sams explained.
The remark from Sams is the latest example of the White House recently becoming more aggressive in the run-up to 2024, increasingly interjecting and criticizing the GOP.
The White House has slammed Republicans and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for speculating about an impeachment inquiry and has been quick with documents and statements criticizing the GOP attacks on the president.
Way back in January this year, during the interview, for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the speakership “has been seemingly his landmark political goal for himself, and he is as ambitious as the next politician,” Sarah Binder, professor of political science at George Washington University and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. “Oftentimes, it is holding power and not necessarily what you are going to do with the power that makes a difference to these leaders.”
