The Service Employees International Union Local 721, representing over 7,000 city employees including traffic officers, gardeners, mechanics, custodians, lifeguards, and engineers, has initiated a one-day walkout to highlight perceived unfair labor practices and lack of negotiation efforts by city management.

Union members commenced the workers on strike at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday to voice concerns over vacant positions within city agencies causing excessive overtime. The action’s focal point is to demand respect for workers’ dedication and essential contributions. Notably, public services are bearing the brunt of the workers on strike. Lifeguards’ absence forced certain swimming pools to close for the day, trash collection is postponed, and animal shelters are shut. Moreover, traffic control officers’ absence might affect nighttime concerts by workers on strike.
While Mayor Karen Bass emphasizes that essential services like emergency responses, homeless assistance, and libraries will continue, the workers on strike’s impact remains substantial. The action’s effects are intended to ripple widely, with picket lines established at locations like Los Angeles International Airport and City Hall. However, the Mayor maintains that the city remains operational and committed to negotiations.
