The incident took place on Monday when Joel Bowman allegedly attempted to enter the Jewish school with a handgun.
Authorities have charged Joel Bowman, a 33-year-old man, with attempted murder in the second degree, among other charges, following an incident at the Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South
However, Joel Bowman was unable to gain entry and subsequently fired shots outside the school before fleeing the scene, as reported by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident, but the situation escalated when police stopped Joel Bowman in his truck shortly afterward. According to Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe, Joel Bowman exited the vehicle while holding a gun and was shot by a police officer.
Authorities have pressed several charges against Joel Bowman, including criminal attempted second-degree murder, carrying weapons on school property, reckless endangerment, possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and assault against a first responder.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear as the investigation continues. A spokesperson for the Secure Community Network, an organization associated with the Memphis Jewish Federation, previously stated that the incident appeared to be “personal in nature.”

In response to the incident, the Margolin Hebrew Academy issued a statement expressing shock and sadness. They also expressed gratitude that their extensive security measures and the swift response from the Memphis Police Department ensured the safety of everyone at the school.
The situation is being closely monitored as law enforcement officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attempted shooting at the Memphis Jewish school.
