In a recent court hearing, Riquna Williams, a 33-year-old WNBA player and member of the Las Vegas Aces, was ordered by a judge to remain in the Las Vegas area and follow strict personal restrictions while awaiting court action for a felony domestic violence case.
Riquna Williams, who hasn’t played this season due to a back injury, stood silently in court as her attorney, Brandon Albright, stated her intention to plead not guilty
The judge, Justice of the Peace Amy Mitchell Williams, emphasized the conditions Riquna Williams must adhere to, including GPS monitoring, a prohibition from leaving Clark County, and a ban on alcohol usage. Additionally, Riquna Williams is required to respond to telephonic check-ins from detention officials and is forbidden from contacting the alleged victim in any way. Riquna Williams, known by the nickname “Bay Bay,” had an average of 6.7 points last season but has been suspended from the team since her arrest. Her next court date is scheduled for September 7, just a week before the WNBA playoffs begin.
The charges against Riquna Williams include five felonies, such as domestic battery by strangulation, coercion by force, and assault with a weapon
She also faces four misdemeanor domestic battery charges. Riquna Williams was arrested on July 25 following an argument with her wife about their four-year relationship that ended with them getting married last September. Notably, the alleged victim has moved out of state.
This is not the first time Riquna Williams has faced legal trouble related to domestic violence. She served a 10-game league suspension while playing for the Los Angeles Sparks due to similar charges.
Riquna Williams, who was drafted in 2012 by the Tulsa Shock after playing for the University of Miami, has also played professionally overseas. Despite her current legal situation, her attorney affirms that she is committed to showing the court that she is abiding by all the necessary requirements.
