Even in places that have experienced comparable waves of crime, Monroe County’s ongoing incidence of auto thefts is significantly higher compared to locations in other places.
The number of crimes is increasing rapidly as the summer goes on. Cases of thefts that result in harm to property but might be much more harmful are almost daily. On Wednesday, a 15-year-old was charged with stealing a vehicle in the city, crashing with another vehicle, and then hitting a residence in Irondequoit. The youngster was rushed to a hospital with minor injuries.
This occurs at a moment when violent crime, though still common, is beginning to decline in Rochester and other places. However, with their current rate of auto thefts, Rochester and Monroe County are essentially a coincidence compared to other crimes that increased nationally throughout the epidemic, including murders and homicides. Yes, there have been rises in other places, but not to the extent that has been experienced locally.
