According to the Suffolk County, New York sheriff, more women sex workers have come forward and claimed to have interacted with the Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann, according to CBS New York.
“My staff is really going to vet these additional females to see if they actually did come in contact with him,” Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. said to the station. “We’ll then see what that contact was and see if that can lead us in any other possible direction.”
Rex Heuermann is able to have alone time, make phone calls, and obtain mail from behind bars, according to Toulon.
Tuesday’s press briefing featured Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announcing that the search of Heuermann’s Long Island residence was over.
Tierney reported that 92 handgun licenses and “quite a few long guns” were among the “approximately 279 weapons” that cops discovered in the “cluttered” home.
A “massive amount of material” was also removed from the house in addition to the guns, but Tierney would only state that no “singular piece of evidence” stood out to him.
According to authorities, many of the weapons were discovered inside a walk-in vault in Rex Heuermann’s basement. The vault had a substantial iron door, but according to Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, it wasn’t soundproof.
Rex Heuermann, a New York City-based architect, has been accused of the murders of three women and is the main suspect in a fourth case, according to the authorities.
In 2010, the bodies were discovered on Gilgo Beach a quarter mile apart, each wrapped in burlap. Rex Heuermann has entered a not-guilty plea and will return to court on Tuesday. His detention is without bond.
The rear of the Massapequa Park house as well as a storage facility close by have both been investigated by investigators.
According to Tierney, no “large items of evidence” were discovered in the yard, as reported by The Associated Press.
The search at Rex Heuermann’s home included the use of an excavator, sonar equipment, cadaver dogs, and shovel-based foundation searches.
Rex Heuermann, his wife Asa Ellerup, and their two daughters lived in the house, and police have been looking into if any murders took place there. Ellerup has divorced his wife.
Rex Heuermann hasn’t been ruled out as a suspect in the seven additional sets of remains that were discovered on the same beach between 2010 and 2011 according to CBS New York.
