James Dexter Brown, a 33-year-old man from East Hartford, has been handed a 40-year prison sentence for the murder of 20-year-old Kenny Sullivan back in 2008

The Division of Criminal Justice announced the sentencing on Monday, bringing some closure to the eight-year-long James Dexter Brown investigation into the tragic incident. On June 26, 2008, police responded to reports of a shooting near Main Street and Trumbull Street shortly after a 93.7 Hot Jam Concert at the XL Center. Kenny Sullivan was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was immediately taken to Hartford Hospital. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities from the Hartford Police Department and State’s Attorney Office Cold Case Unit tirelessly pursued James Dexter Brown’s case over the years

Their hard work paid off, and on September 21, 2016, they secured an arrest warrant for James Dexter Brown. At the time, James Dexter Brown was already serving a sentence for unrelated drug charges at the Butner Federal Correctional Institute in North Carolina. James Dexter Brown willingly waived his right to extradition and was brought to Hartford in December 2018 to face the murder charges.

Chief State’s Attorney Patrick Griffin expressed appreciation for the dedicated investigators and prosecutors involved in the James Dexter Brown case, highlighting their unwavering commitment to seeking justice for victims of such heinous crimes. He emphasized that the Cold Case Unit remains devoted to resolving issues like these, ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable and the affected families find some semblance of peace.
