Per Scholas, the national tech training nonprofit has announced its expansion into Houston, Texas
The new campus, situated at 4201 Main St., is made possible through an investment from Rice University, which developed the Ion, as well as additional support from BlackRock and Comcast NBCUniversal.
The inclusion of Per Scholas in Houston aligns with Ion’s commitment to fostering technological skills within the local community, as outlined in a community benefits agreement between Rice University and the city. Jan Odegard, the Executive Director of Ion, expressed that this investment will create opportunities for Houston residents to acquire new skills in the city’s dynamic economy.
Per Scholas aims to promote diversity and inclusivity in its programs
According to a recent news release, approximately 85% of its learners are people of color, with over 40% identifying as women. More than half of the participants hold a high school diploma as their highest educational qualification. Per Scholas offers 12- to 15-week courses tailored to individuals, communities, and businesses.
The first training program, an IT support course, is scheduled to commence in October. Interested individuals can visit the Per Scholas website to learn more and apply.
Per Scholas has already been operating in Dallas since 2014, successfully providing tech training to individuals in the area.
