After receiving a complaint of animal cruelty regarding the cats, who were allegedly all called Shelly, Thomas Martel turned himself over to the police.
At least four cats were allegedly tortured and killed by an Illinois guy who put them in his apartment’s microwave.
Fox News reports that Thomas Martel handed himself in to the authorities on Monday as a result of a lady accusing him of animal cruelty.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the 22-year-old has been charged with two felony counts of animal torture and four felony counts of extreme animal cruelty.
According to an arrest report that FOX 32 Chicago was able to obtain, Martel is accused of mutilating, drowning, and squeezing three animals causing him to be charged with animal cruelty.
At Martel’s Wicker Park residence, three cats were purportedly found in a bag by the authorities. According to his fiancée, who reported Martel for animal cruelty, the cats were microwaved before being placed in a plastic bag, according to local news source CWB Chicago.
Police claim that Martel bought lookalike cats so his mother wouldn’t become suspicious of animal cruelty and that all of the kittens he is accused of killing were named Shelly.
According to the site, Martel’s girlfriend first learned about his alleged behavior after seeing a video of him allegedly tossing a pillowcase containing his cat, Shelly, into Lake Michigan.
Additionally, according to the authorities, Martel recently informed his girlfriend that “he enjoyed killing cats, and he had been like that since he was 8 years old,” as reported by CWB Chicago.
According to Fox News, the girlfriend told authorities that while Martel was high on drugs and alcohol, she saw him drown one of his animals.
According to investigators, citing Fox News, Martel allegedly confessed to the woman of animal cruelty before she called the police that he had microwaved three of the cats and put them in a plastic bag before storing them in his apartment.
Animal cruelty can take many different forms, from momentarily neglecting to provide for basic needs to intentionally killing or repeatedly abusing an animal. Regarding the exact behaviors that are forbidden as well as the types of animals that are protected, each state has its own definition of animal cruelty.
