Five years after the tragic Parkland high school shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people, including 14 students and three faculty members, a grieving father visited the untouched site and was confronted with a chilling reality.
Survivors’ families witness haunting remains of Parkland High School shooting in emotional tours
Max Schachter, father of Alex Schachter, recounted his experience, stating that he was unprepared for the horrific sight that awaited him. “I wanted to go in Alex’s classroom”.
In response to requests from some families and survivors, private tours are being conducted within the 1200 building at Parkland High School, where the deadliest high school shooting in US history occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2018. The Parkland High School building has been preserved pending two trials related to the incident, which sparked a wave of student-led protests against the prevailing issue of school shootings in America.
Schachter, who serves on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, admitted that despite his extensive knowledge of the tragedy, the condition of the crime scene shocked him.
Linda Beigel Schulman, the mother of geography teacher Scott Beigel who lost his life in the Parkland High School shooting, also expressed her anguish upon witnessing the preserved scene
“Everything was left the way it was on that day,” she said, referring to the devastating atmosphere inside Parkland High School. Walking through the classrooms, she noticed bullet holes and envisioned the exact locations where her son and the shooter had been positioned during the tragedy.
She further described the emotional impact of discovering Valentine’s Day candy and student letters in Scott’s classroom. The sight of the holiday decorations mingled with the remnants of the tragedy was deeply distressing for her, bringing the memories vividly to life.
As these grieving families continue to grapple with the profound loss they endured, their visits to Parkland high school serve as a stark reminder of the tragic events that unfolded that fateful day.
