The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service announced on Tuesday that the investigation has been ongoing for several years, with one of the alleged offenses dating back to 2005.

The actor, known for his role as Sioux tribe member Smiles a Lot in the 1990 film starring Kevin Costner, has been in custody in Las Vegas since his arrest in January. He is currently facing 18 felony charges, including sexual assault of a minor, child abuse, and kidnapping, in southern Nevada.
According to court documents, the accused was the leader of a group called “The Circle,” described as having cult-like characteristics. It is alleged that he exploited his position to gain the trust of Indigenous families and their children, engaging in relationships with underage individuals. The legal proceedings in Nevada have been temporarily halted as the actor appeals to the state’s Supreme Court to dismiss the case. His defense lawyers claim that the alleged victims willingly engaged in sexual activities with him.
The actor is also facing criminal allegations in Montana and British Columbia
California attorney Alexandra Kazarian, who previously represented him, has not yet provided a comment on the matter. The arrest in the United States was initiated by a report from a woman in British Columbia who claimed that she had been sexually involved with the actor since the age of 17, after meeting him when she was 13 during his ceremonies in Canada. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) contacted the Las Vegas police, leading to the investigation and subsequent arrest.
The Tsuut’ina police, responsible for serving the First Nation community near Calgary, emphasized the extensive planning and cooperation required for prosecuting the actor across multiple jurisdictions. In 2015, the Tsuut’ina band council passed a resolution banning him from all community events.
