CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire attorney general’s office announced on Wednesday that an autopsy determined the death of Nathan Carman, a man awaiting trial for the alleged murder of his mother, was not suspicious. Carman, 29, was found dead in his cell at a county jail in New Hampshire on June 15. The cause and manner of death are not being released by the attorney general’s office, following their policy for non-suspicious deaths. The U.S. Marshals Service in Vermont has also declined to disclose the cause of death at the family’s request.

Authorities consider a death to be non-suspicious when they have determined no involvement of another person or the absence of a crime.

Carman had pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud and first-degree murder in relation to the 2016 death of his mother, Linda Carman. His trial was scheduled for October. A separate indictment stated that Carman also shot and killed his grandfather, John Chakalos, in 2013, allegedly motivated by a monetary gain from his grandfather’s estate. However, Carman was not charged with his grandfather’s murder and consistently denied any involvement in both deaths.

According to prosecutors, in September 2016, Carman organized a fishing trip with his mother, intending to kill her and stage an accident where his boat would sink and his mother would disappear. Eight days after leaving a Rhode Island marina, Carman was found floating on an inflatable raft, while his mother’s body was never recovered. Prosecutors alleged that Carman had tampered with the boat to increase the likelihood of it sinking, but he vehemently denied these accusations.

Carman’s defense attorneys, Martin Minnella and David Sullivan, criticized the indictment, particularly the allegations of his involvement in his grandfather’s murder, pointing out that he was never charged with that specific crime.

The circumstances surrounding Carman’s death and the impact on the pending trial remain unknown. The case has captivated public attention due to its complex nature and the alleged motive of financial gain. Further details regarding the cause of Nathan Carman’s death may remain confidential, respecting the family’s wishes.
