Maryland residents who have been anxiously awaiting their June payment for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can expect to receive it by Friday, bringing much-needed relief.
The payment schedule for SNAP benefits in Maryland began on June 4 and will conclude on June 23
Around 772,700 people in Maryland, which accounts for approximately 13% of the state’s population, rely on SNAP benefits to help meet their nutritional needs. On average, each household member receives a monthly payment of $180.
According to the Maryland Department of Human Services, the maximum benefit amount for a single-person household is $373 as of September 2022. For larger families, the maximum payment increases to $1,691 for a family of eight. Beyond eight members, an additional $211 is provided for each individual added to the household. Eligible individuals who have applied and been approved for SNAP benefits will receive the allocated amount on a prepaid electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card. This card functions like a debit card and can be used at grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and select online retailers, with the intention of promoting the purchase of healthy foods.
It’s important to note that the number of SNAP recipients varies across states, with higher population or poverty rates often correlating to a larger number of beneficiaries
SNAP benefits are determined based on a combination of household income and size. Typically, a recipient’s household income must be at or below 130% of the poverty line. For fiscal year 2023, the poverty line used to calculate SNAP benefits stands at $1,920 per month.
Maryland residents can now anticipate the imminent arrival of their June SNAP payments, easing financial burdens and ensuring access to essential nutrition for individuals and families in need.
