A Florida woman is facing manslaughter charges after a fatal shooting occurred during a confrontation with her neighbor, a Black mother

Owens had repeatedly knocked on Lorincz’s door, demanding that she come out of her apartment. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released seven 911 calls made on June 2, shedding light on the events leading up to the tragic incident.

According to authorities, the dispute arose after Lorincz yelled at Owens’ children and threw a roller skate at her 10-year-old son, hitting him. In response, Owens confronted Lorincz, leading to a heated exchange. Lorincz called 911 prior to the shooting, stating that she felt threatened in her own home. She complained about children trespassing on her property and described their behavior as obnoxious.

Shortly after the call, multiple 911 reports were made about shots fired in the area. Owens’ 10-year-old son informed a deputy that Lorincz had picked up his electronic tablet and thrown it on the ground when he asked for its return. The situation escalated as he confronted Lorincz at her front door, provoking her to swing an umbrella at him. Owens was alerted to the incident and joined her child at the door, demanding that Lorincz throw something at her if she wanted to do so.

In the second 911 call, Lorincz recounted the shooting, claiming that Owens attempted to break down her door

She said she shot through the door in self-defense, fearing for her life. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, Owens was found injured on the ground and later died in a local hospital. Lorincz alleged that she discharged her firearm because she believed Owens posed a mortal threat.

However, detectives concluded that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law. In addition to manslaughter with a firearm, she is also facing charges of culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault. Owens’ family has called for the arrest and charging of Lorincz, accusing her of racial harassment towards the children.

Lorincz is currently in custody on a $154,000 bond and is prohibited from possessing firearms or having contact with the victim’s family. Her arraignment is scheduled for July 11, and she will be required to wear an ankle monitor if she posts bond.
