At 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, Annapolis Police responded to a shooting report in the 1000 block of Paddington Place off Edgewood Road and discovered six victims with gunshot wounds. Three people were reported dead at the site, while three others were taken to nearby hospitals.

The patients who were admitted to the hospital are now in stable condition. The victims were named as 55-year-old Nicholas Mireles, 27-year-old Mario Antonio Mireles Ruiz, and 25-year-old Christian Marlon Segovia by police.

Charles Robert Smith, the suspect, was apprehended by officers. As of Monday, he was charged with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a violent felony by the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. According to police, he was in possession of a semi-automatic handgun and a long gun.

He is being detained without bond.

Mario Mireles was having a party on Sunday night, according to charging documents obtained by NBC Washington. Smith’s mother reportedly contacted parking enforcement in Annapolis because someone’s car was obstructing her driveway. Mario Mireles allegedly went over to Smith’s residence to speak with the mother, and the two allegedly argued.

Smith allegedly returned home and confronted Mario Mireles about what had occurred. He allegedly walked into his house and started firing through a window, killing Mario Mireles, his father, Nicholas, and Segovia.

During a press conference on Monday, June 12, Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson stated that his department is not “ruling anything out” in terms of the shooting being a hate crime.

“Officially, our suspect is a white male, and the three victims are Latino, but we can’t draw any conclusions from that; we have to look at every possible angle,” he stated.
