Officials verified on Sunday that the father who perished last week after attempting to save his kid daughter from a strong current at the Jersey Shore was a New York City firefighter with a 15-year public service career.
According to CBS New York, using police, the guy, 39-year-old Mark Batista, passed away at the New Jersey seaside town of Avon-by-the-Sea on Friday afternoon when he had been off duty after diving into the water to rescue his adolescent daughter who got stuck in a rip current at that point in time. A rip current is an area of flowing water that originates in the ocean and rushes away from the beach and back to the sea. It resembles a river in some ways.
Officials initially claimed that Batista was a Teaneck citizen, but they withheld his name. Afterward, the New York City Fire Department verified his name in a statement that CBS News got on Sunday, noting that he had worked for 15 years working for the department as either an EMT or a firefighter. As reported by CBS New York, Batista served at Engine Company 226 in Brooklyn.
