Boston’s ABCD concluded its successful 2023 tax season, providing crucial tax assistance to 3,103 residents in completing their state and federal tax returns

Furthermore, nearly 16% of the returns completed were eligible for Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), accounting for almost 500 cases. ABCD’s IRS-certified tax preparers began their work in January, offering in-person appointments and document drop-off services to assist residents in filing their tax returns electronically. The organization provided free tax assistance at 11 neighborhood sites across Boston and two satellite locations in the Mystic Valley area. Eligibility for these services was based on earnings, with individuals who earned $60,000 or less in 2022 qualifying for the program.

Expressing pride in ABCD’s collaboration with the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the Boston Tax Help Coalition, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) President and CEO Sharon Scott-Chandler emphasized the importance of free tax preparation services in supporting struggling individuals. By leveraging the expertise of IRS-certified tax professionals, the program ensures that residents in Greater Boston receive the tax credits they are entitled to, ultimately injecting money into hardworking families and bolstering businesses in under-resourced neighborhoods.

ABCD continues to offer tax preparation services at two locations: the Mattapan Family Service Center and the South End Neighborhood Service Center

Those eligible for free tax assistance services include individuals who earned $60,000 or less in 2022, people with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers. ABCD plays a vital role in the Boston Tax Help Coalition, a public-private partnership focused on ensuring the full participation of all Boston residents in the city’s economic vitality and future.

As a member of the Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) network, ABCD also provides free tax preparation services in the Mystic Valley Area. Both coalitions operate under the federal VITA program.

ABCD, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit human services organization, has been dedicated to supporting disadvantaged residents in the Boston and Mystic Valley areas for 60 years. Through a wide range of initiatives and proven programs, ABCD empowers individuals and families, helping them overcome poverty and achieve stability and success. With over 100,000 individuals, elders, and families served each year, ABCD remains deeply committed to its mission of promoting dignity and realizing the full potential of the communities it serves.
