The incident occurred when the child called 911 seeking help and sparked demands from the family for the officer to be terminated from duty and face charges for the shooting.
An 11-year-old boy from Mississippi who was shot by a police officer is now recovering after being discharged from the hospital
According to the boy’s mother, Nakala Murry, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Indianola Police Department officer opened fire on Aderrien while responding to a domestic disturbance call at their residence in the early hours of Saturday. Murry explained that an agitated father, who was the parent of another of her children, arrived at her home around 4 a.m. Concerned for her safety, she instructed Aderrien to contact the police.
Murry recounted that when the officer arrived, he had his gun drawn at the front door and ordered the occupants to come outside. Tragically, her son was shot as he turned the corner from a hallway into the living room. A bewildered Aderrien kept asking why he had been shot, as he had followed the officer’s command to leave the house. The entire incident took place within a span of one to two minutes.

He was admitted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and placed on a ventilator but has since been released from the hospital. The family attorney has requested access to the body camera footage, but the request was denied due to the ongoing investigation.
The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Greg Capers of the Indianola Police Department. While the investigation continues, Capers has been placed on paid administrative leave. The family’s attorney expressed anger at the officer’s continued employment and stated their intention to hold a sit-in protest at Indianola City Hall to demand justice.
The incident has raised concerns within the community, as Indianola is a predominantly African American town with a poverty rate of 31%. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently examining the case and will forward its findings to the state attorney general’s office upon completion. The District Attorney’s Office for the Fourth Circuit Court and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office have been contacted for comment.
The family remains grateful that their son survived the harrowing ordeal, but they are resolute in seeking accountability for the damages caused. The shooting has ignited a call for justice and a renewed focus on police conduct in Indianola.
