A bill that bans access to gender-affirming health services for those under the age of 19 and outlaws abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy was approved by Republican Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen on Monday.
The gender-affirming care prohibition goes into force on October 1; the prohibition on abortion goes into action instantly. The hybrid bill brings together the limits that Republicans have sought to enact all around the country.
In front of his 2 eldest grandchildren and a 5-day-old newborn, Pillen declared the measure to be “the most important victory for social conservative agenda in nearly a generation of Nebraska” as he signed it.
“It’s about safeguarding our children and preserving infants. Simply put,” Pillen stated.
The law’s supporters are going to file a lawsuit to try to stop it. In a statement, Mindy Rush Chipman, the state director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, stated that “every opportunity is on the table to reverse these offensive measures.”
