The limitations on guns for assault and large-capacity magazines in Illinois are still in effect because the Supreme Court decided not to instantly abolish them.
Before to the appeals court’s final decision, a gun rights organization and a gun store owner participated in the case and urged the justices to suspend the law’s implementation. A Naperville, Illinois, rule that prohibits the trade of assault firearms is also being challenged in the lawsuit.
In a short, unsigned order, the justices refused to assist at this point in the case, which might potentially be referred to the Supreme Court for consideration of the merits.
The conservative majority of the court issued a decision this summer that represents the court’s biggest enlargement of gun rights in over ten years, holding that any proposed gun control laws need to be compatible with the nation’s longstanding record of weapon regulation.
Following the ruling, several Democratic-led states implemented new gun control measures, and lawsuits were rapidly brought.
