The exact nature of the alleged violations is unclear, but George Santos could appear in court as early as Wednesday morning

George Santos has been under scrutiny by state and federal prosecutors since he was elected to New York’s 3rd Congressional District last November. He has previously admitted to embellishing parts of his resume and was also being investigated for his involvement in a fundraising scheme for a veteran’s dying dog. Santos has also faced complaints regarding his campaign spending and financial disclosures.

Santos has so far resisted calls for his resignation, but news of the criminal charges has led to renewed demands from fellow politicians

Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres stated that Santos must resign or be expelled from Congress. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy stated that he had not seen the indictment but would ask Santos to resign if he is found guilty. Santos has given up his assignments on two House committees in response to ongoing attention surrounding investigations into his personal and campaign finances. The speaker stated that any decision about Santos’s future in Congress will ultimately be made by his constituents.
