A proposal to provide reparations to the offspring of slave persons in California has just been approved by a committee of professors and legislators in the state. The historic plan, which comes after a 2-year procedure, is the first state-level effort to address the long-lasting impacts of enslavement and racist legislation. As per certain media estimates, it also has a price tag in the billions of dollars and might result in rewards of $1.2 million for senior citizens.
But the procedure has only just begun. The task committee in California has to present its suggestions to legislators, which would be responsible for establishing them as legislation.
What is the real language of the reparations proposal?
The reparations task force advised the state to issue an official apology for its part in supporting slavery and other racially discriminatory legislation.
As stated in the report, issues for the apologies consist of the state’s 1st governor, Peter Burnett, who was criticized for being an “avid white supremacist,” the state’s implementation of the federal law on escapee slaves, the state’s failure to approving the 14th and 15th Amendments, that officially banned slavery, and its ban on interracial marriage.
