Iraqi Officer Receives Death Sentence After Killing Militia Critic

An Iraqi officer named Ahmed Hamdawi al-Kinani received a death sentence Sunday after killing Hisham al-Hashimi, a 47-year-old security analyst and a militia critic, in July 2020.

Before the Iraqi officer fatally shot al-Hashimi, the militia critic reportedly received multiple threats from suspected militia groups after voicing his criticism against militias’ growing power and influence in 2017.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that the militia critic was attacked by two individuals, including the Iraqi officer, riding a motorcycle, which was captured on a surveillance camera near the area and became a piece of strong evidence to the case, AP News reported.

Iraqi Officer Allegedly Protects Militia Groups Involved in Killing Militia Critic

Despite learning the verdict and getting justice, al-Hashimi’s family believed that there were more powerful groups or individuals behind his death other than the convicted Iraqi officer, who would remain threatening other activists and critics.

Following his arrest, the Iraqi officer did not admit any involvement with other armed groups nor pointed out who ordered him to shoot the militia critic, and only confessed that he was indeed connected to a militia.
