Bernice King, M.L.K. Jr.’s youngest daughter, has spoken out about her father’s slap going viral. To defend herself, she said that one user’s negative stereotypes about the Black community were reinforced by Will Smith’s actions.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roger Ross Williams, a Black member of the Academy’s board of governors, said, “It promotes prejudices about Black people, and it just pains me to the core.” Rather than having the argument onstage, take it elsewhere.
When asked about the Oscars, Bernice wrote, “Anyone who believes ‘Black people look horrible’ after the Oscars always felt Black people look bad.” No amount of social standing can heal bigotry. Be loved, but don’t assume that someone who seizes on a particular incident to smear an entire group hasn’t done so before.
