As a minor leaguer in 1966 and 1967, he was a member of the Buffalo Bisons. His big league debut came in August of 1967. Bench spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds. He was named the National League’s top rookie that year (1968). Between the years 1968 and 1977, he won the Gold Glove Award a total of ten times. He made the team 14 times between 1968 and 1980, plus once more in 1983.
In his time with the Big Red Machine, he helped them win six division crowns, four National League pennants, and two World Series titles (1975 and 1976). The bench was the most valuable player of the National League in 1970 and 1972 and the most valuable player of the World Series in 1976.
